Does Acupuncture For ED (Erectile Dysfunction) Work?

Spencer Williams

The strongest scientific proof regarding the benefits of acupuncture was released in 2012 by a team of researchers from all around the world, including England, Germany and Sweden. Dr. Andrew J. Vickers led the research team and the findings were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. But whether acupuncture for erectile dysfunction actually works, is still debatable. Here are the facts.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Every other form of acupuncture is derived from this method and it’s probably the most widely used. It’s the technique everyone has come to associate with acupuncture although some variation exists among practitioners.

What Made This Study Different?

For starters, this extensive research expedition into acupuncture took no less than 6 years. Some of the previous studies that gathered the same results weren’t convincing enough due to low-quality and small procedures, but Dr. Vickers (Research Methodologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York) and his team didn’t take any chances. They took all previous findings and with heavy scrutiny they started from the bottom. Their findings are based on at least 18 000 patient records and this time around it is much more detailed.

The Controversy

Specialists who haven’t warmed up to the idea of acupuncture have argued that the placebo effect is the main reason why people believe it works. Several studies have been done where sham acupuncture was used and the placebo effect did show results, but Dr. Vickery says that it provides more than just a psychological boost.

He firmly believes after 6 years of extensive research that acupuncture has modest benefits above traditional, over-the-counter medicine. Even children are starting to get used to the idea of acupuncture and in 2007 it was reported that 150 000 kids took part in acupuncture sessions.

Does Acupuncture Work For ED?

This is a rather difficult question to answer, because acupuncture is better known for treating pain and discomfort. More specifically, it is used to treat areas that are capable of self-healing. On the one side of the spectrum there are men who don’t find acupuncture for ED effective while there are a few who swear by it. From the medical sidelines, doctors can’t figure out whether the men who use acupuncture for erectile dysfunction are benefiting from their faith, or whether it’s the treatment for ED.

Acupuncture For ED – Erectile Dysfunction

According to studies, erectile dysfunction (ED) is mainly rooted in psychological problems, not physically. In fact, most psychologists agree that 90% of problems related to sexual performance problems are caused by what goes on in the mind. For the most part, if men keep themselves healthy and follow a healthy lifestyle, they should be able to avoid erectile dysfunction symptoms altogether.

The Bottom Line

Studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective, but it can’t be 100% proven to help erectile dysfunction. This means that the only way a man will be able to tell if the acupuncture for ED works is to actually give it a try and test it.

It has helped several men get their performance back and there is a 50/50 chance that it will work for you. The key here is, like all the other treatments for ED is to find a reputable practitioner that you can interview and verify that they had successfully applied their skills in using acupuncture for ED.
